Nasty Cake

This recipe comes from my Nana. I speculate that the name derives from it's being so gooey and good. This cake is extra yummy served hot with vanilla ice cream on the side. It's so rich I only make it once or twice a year!

Nasty Cake
1 Devil's Food cake mix
1 tsp cinnamon
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce, OR sour cream, OR vegetable oil

1 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional)
2 cups sugar
1 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup butter, (1 stick)
2/3 cup whole or 2% milk (original recipe uses 1 small can evaporated milk)
1/2 tsp baking soda

Mix the cake mix, eggs, water, applesauce, cinnamon, and nuts together. Bake as directed on the box.
5 minutes before the cake is done, combine sugar, corn syrup, butter, and milk in a large, heavy saucepan. Make sure it's much larger than you think it should be. Bring to a boil, and cook 2 minutes. Remove pan from the heat, and add baking soda. The mixture will bubble up to more than double the original volume. Stir well. Remove cake from the oven and cut into squares immediately. Pour the glaze over the cake, covering evenly. Let sit 5 minutes. Serve hot or cold.
As you can see...this doesn't last long at our house!
