Homemade Shampoo

I found this website with the whys and hows of going "poo less". I've done it and love it! It took a full 8 weeks for my scalp to normalize, but now my hair is shiny and clean. It starts to get greasy about day 3...the same time frame as when I used commercial shampoos. I don't have any dandruff or an itchy scalp anymore either. The measurements I use are different than hers. I figured out the right amount for my hair...you'll need to adjust them for yours too.

Check out this article on the dangers of commercial shampoo. And here's another one. These articles talk about buying organic shampoos, which is fine...but I can make my own for about a penny a wash.

Homemade Shampoo

TO PREPARE:
2 squeeze bottles (Found mine at the beauty supply)
1 sharpie marker
1 wide mouth jar with lid
1 box baking soda
1 teaspoon
1 12"-18" length of ribbon or twine
1 jar apple cider vinegar (I use organic)
50 drops lavender essential oil (NOT fragrance oil)(optional)
1/4 cup dried peppermint (optional)
Add 1 Tbsp water to one squeeze bottle. Mark the line where the water comes to on the bottle with the marker. Write "Vinegar Rinse" on the bottle. Pour out the water. Write "Hair Wash" on the other bottle. Empty the box of baking soda into the jar and screw the lid on. Tie the teaspoon onto the end of the ribbon. Tie the other end around the jar. Add the lavender oil and peppermint to the jar of vinegar. Shake well. (NOTE: the peppermint will remain in the vinegar bottle and come out into your rinse. It will wash out of the hair. The vinegar smell will remain until the hair is dry, then it will smell like lavender and peppermint.)

TO USE:
Before hopping in the shower...Comb hair to loosen dirt. Place 2 tsp baking soda in the Hair Wash bottle. Fill with water to make about a cup. Shake vinegar bottle well and pour into Vinegar Rinse bottle up to the pre-marked line. Add water to make about a cup. Shake both bottles well. In the shower, wet hair thoroughly. Squeeze Hair Wash on the scalp. Massage and rinse. Squeeze on the Vinegar Rinse all over the hair. Let sit for 1-3 minutes. Rinse off.
