Ok, I'm officially going "poo-less". That's the term on the net for not using commercial shampoo. Here's the link to a blog that talks about it. Of course, I'm not endorsing this blog...just this one post. I've been using a homemade shampoo for some time now. Its VERY SCARY, some of the cancer causing chemicals in commercial beauty products. We've found lotion, chap stick, soap, laundry & cleaning recipes, herbal remedies, and bug repellent to eliminate the chemicals.
Caution...here comes a commercial...Our friends, Pat and Marilyn Weber have an organic farm. These people are great. They sell beauty products and a ton more. They'll ship to you anywhere in the country too. Or, ask around at your local farmer's market and the health food stores to find organic farmers or soap makers near you. Check out their home page to see everything they do. Ok, enough of the commercial for Pat and Marilyn! Moving on...
So, I've been using the homemade shampoo in my quest to get away from the chemicals. It took my scalp about 8 weeks to "normalize" and start producing the correct amount of oil. Now, I can go 3 or 4 days without washing my hair and it isn't oily. I'm starting the "poo-less" phase today...I'll let you know how it goes.
I was also ecstatic to find this recipe for homemade deodorant on the Angry Chicken blog! I'm itching to try it, but need to get a couple of the ingredients first...more on that later. If I can conquer the deodorant...we'll be pretty much chemical free. Hurray! If you get a chance, check out Amy's tutorials....if you've ever been buggered by bias tape...she has the answer! This is one of my top 3 favorite blogs.
Another commercial...Shoshanna Easling has a great online store, Bulk Herb Store. I order all my herbs from her. Check out the side bar under "Sharing Remedies", "New To Herbs", and "How To". I suggest you start with the "New to Herbs" section. My all time favorite book is "The ABC Herbal". I learned all the basics of why and how herbs work. This book is written for administering herbs to kids, but I use the recipes in there for all of us. The only thing she doesn't have is glycerin in bulk, which you'll need to make the remedies. You can also buy Shoshanna's herbs at the More Than Alive site..there's a bulk discount for that. That site doesn't carry everything that Shoshanna has though. But, check it out and see if everything you need can be had there. The More Than Alive site also has most of the articles that are on Shoshanna's site. If you're interested in parenting resources, alot of Shoshanna's parent's books are available on there. These are my favorite for younger children , and older children , and marriages. The ABC Herbal book is available on the More Than Alive site too.
Whew!...so, now you know how to find the information its taken me years to ferret out...all in one fell swoop! Aren't you glad I'm so helpful! Seriously, I hope you jump on the healthy lifestyles band wagon with me. Its not about becoming a hippie....its about being a good steward over this earth and my body for the glory of our Lord!
